History

The History program at MHU prepares undergraduates for meaningful and active roles in society, and develops employment-ready, transferable skills for a variety of professions. The history curriculum fulfills these objectives by honing critical thinking skills, oral and written communication skills, research skills, information literacy, and by providing a systemic understanding about how people and societies behave.

THE VALUE OF HISTORY

“Only through studying history can we grasp how things change; only through history can we begin to comprehend the factors that cause change; and only through history can we understand what elements of an institution or a society persist despite change.”

–Peter Stearns, Historian

“We cannot help but approach the world from a historical frame of mind because it is built-in.  We all make sense of the world by situating ourselves historically in narratives that cover our personal lives, our family sagas, and our place in larger national and international dramas…. The need to understand historically is part of our make-up as human beings.  Without historical understanding, knowledge would be empty and we would be lost in time and space, devoid of identity.  As a form of knowledge, then, history does matter.”

–Frank Ninkovich, Historian
