The Academic Programs of Study at Mars Hill University are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
The BA in Music is designed for students who wish to major in music, but who have a significant interest in another area of academic study. Typical combinations might include Music and Psychology (leading towards the field of Music Therapy), Music and Religion & Philosophy (leading towards the field of Church Music), or Music and Business (leading to the field of Music Entrepreneurship). The BM in Music Education is a carefully integrated program of study leading to K-12 licensure in North Carolina. Students are certified to teach instrumental and/or vocal music at all grade levels. The program of study combines on campus coursework and off campus field experiences (culminating in the student teaching semesters). The Mars Hill program of study in Music Education is highly respected and our graduates are leaders throughout the teaching profession within the state and region. The BM in Performance is an intense program of study for students wishing to pursue careers in music performance. Students completing this degree typically continue on to pursue advanced degrees at the graduate level. Our graduates continue these studies at some of the most prestigious institutions throughout the world and participate in the performing profession at the highest levels. For students pursuing academic majors in other areas, the Minor in Music offers the opportunity to explore interests in music without the commitment required to complete the music major. The minor in music combines study in Theory, Aural Skills, and Piano along with experiences in ensembles and private instruction.
