Networking

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network on the internet. You can use LinkedIn to find the right job or internship, connect and strengthen professional relationships, and learn the skills you need to succeed in your career. You can access LinkedIn from a desktop, LinkedIn mobile app, or mobile web experience. A complete LinkedIn profile can help you connect with opportunities by showcasing your unique professional story through experience, skills, and education.

Who do You Know?

Whether you know it or not, you have a network. Yes, YOU! Your relatives, instructors, advisors, coaches, colleagues and teammates can all help you get in touch with professional mentors and potential employers if you ask. The important thing is to prepare questions for the person you’d like to meet with, and respect their time by being punctual and keeping the meeting to ~15-20 minutes. Do not ask them directly for a job. Express your interest in getting involved in their type of work, and ask them to tell you about their career path or share advice on how to get started. If you want to practice with someone at the Cothran Center, make an appointment on Handshake.

Resume Resources

Why do Applicant Tracking Systems Matter?

ATS is a type of software that employers can use to track candidates throughout the hiring process. Many companies are using ATS to narrow the applicant pool before manually reviewing resumes. It is used to scan resumes for keywords and sort them into groups based on the results. If a scan does not return the information the employer is looking for, the resume is discarded. This allows companies to save time and money during the hiring process.

Because it is being used as a prescreening tool, it is important to know how your resume is read and judged by ATS software. To see how your resume scores with ATS and how you compare to your peers, review it with Quinncia! Simply upload your resume and receive instant feedback on how you can improve your formatting, organization and content.

Resume Writing YouTube Series

When applying for a job, you’ll most likely be asked to provide a copy of your resume. If you’ve never written one before, that can be quite a daunting task! Between formatting the document, writing the content, and optimizing for ATS, there are a lot of details to keep straight. This three-part video series will walk you through the steps needed to create a polished resume that will help you land your dream job.

Cover Letters

A cover letter is a professional document that normally accompanies your resume. This document gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself to the employer in a more personal way than your resume, and provide context about your interest in the position. It can act as the body of an email if you are reaching out to a potential employer directly, or it can be uploaded to a job application site along with your resume. A cover letter should be updated and customized for each job you apply for. A sample cover letter can be found here: (ATTACH DOCUMENT).
