Residence Life

Welcome home, Lions!

The Residence Life team strives to make living on campus a “home away from home” experience for students. We’re dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of our residents in all ways, with hope that residents experience educational, social, and overall developmental growth during their time at MHU. Within all of our twelve dynamic, unique on-campus residence halls, our team is working hard to provide safe, inclusive housing and encourage connection and belonging all year long! With this in mind, our team holds responsibility for all aspects of on-campus living: staffing, operations, programming, training, policy development, etc. And, as MHU is a primarily-residential campus with approximately 80% of all students living on campus, we take our responsibilities very seriously!

Our mission: to provide a comfortable, safe, well-maintained and equipped housing facility that fosters an atmosphere conducive to each resident’s personal growth and academic success. We aim to enhance each resident’s education by providing leadership opportunities, social activities, and quality educational and cultural programs while encouraging responsible citizenship.

Our vision: to champion knowledge and experiences that promote and encourage ethical citizenship and successful leadership in an ever-changing world.

Our community values:

  • Accountability: Support a community where individuals take responsibility for their own actions.
  • Communication: Engage in a community where open dialogue is encouraged and appreciated. Students are expected to be respectful to others when sharing or receiving information and opinions.
  • Empathy: Strengthen a community that demonstrates compassion and caring for all things.
  • Inclusion: Embrace a community where individual differences are acknowledged and accepted.
  • Integrity: Contribute to a community where ethical decisions are at the root of all actions.
  • Respect: Interact in a community where courtesy is shown to self, others, and environment.

Policies & Code of Conduct

Like any living community, the residence halls have standards of behavior designed to create a positive living environment. Mars Hill’s Student Conduct Code, as well as state and federal laws, apply to all students who live in university owned and operated housing. Additional policies and guidelines have also been established specifically for the residence halls. These policies are designed to ensure that each resident is respectful of their obligation to a communal living situation. There are three guiding principles or community interests that residential policies and guidelines are designed to support.

View the current 2024-25 Student Handbook here, which lists all Residence Life policies as well as the Student Code of Conduct.

Each resident is responsible for asking himself or herself if a behavior falls under one of these principles and then regulating their behavior accordingly. Residence Life staff may confront residents about any action if the staff member believes this action may go against one of these principles:  Health and Safety, Property Loss and Damage, Maintenance of a Healthy Living and Learning Environment.

If any resident is alleged to have violated the Student Code of Conduct, which includes any violation of residence life policy, he/she will be subject to the Student Conduct process. You can find more information on this process in the Student Handbook.
